The English language hads played a significant role in my life. I decided to study to be a language teacher because I love learning about other cultures and working with people. I have now been teaching for seven years already and I plan to teach at a college level. Mastering a second language is not an easy job to do, it demands time and effort; therefore. Linguistics is a must while studying a new language, even more if someone is planning to teach it. Understanding how a language works provides people with the tools they need in order to be proficient. This is why I decided to do my master´s program in TESOL.

Learning phonology has been a new and enriching experience for me. To uUnderstanding what the English sounds are, and how they are different thanfrom the ones I learned in my first language, has been very useful. It has helped me to have a better pronunciation as well as giproveiding me with the tools that I need in order to know how to pronounce new words. It has also provided me with the knowledge that I will needed when I will teaching my students.

Morphology. I akcunowldegrstande how words change and how they should be placed in a sentence according witho the part of thes speech. Whilen learning a second language uwe sually wometimes try to transfer knowledge from one language to another, tTherefore, we make mistaskes in the words categorization and organization of thewords in a sentences. This is why it is important to know how the morphology of the words and it allow us to play with them by adding affixes that will allow a better understanding of the readers or listener. It is necessary to understand it, otherwise people may not understand due to the different meanings words may have.

Syntax. o Once a second language learner understands the phonology and morphology of the words, the next step is to learn how to organize the parts of the speech in a coherent and cohesive way. The placementosition of the words plays an importanta role in the English language. Other languages such as Spanish or French are a littlsome biwhat more flexible with it. But English grammar rules are very strict and the significance of our speeches depends on them.

I am in a process to prepareing myself for the workforce. In Colombia, my home country, there is a lot of competeitionce among ESL teachers. t This is whereforey I want to succeed and to excel in my teaching practices, iand thius way, I will have the opportunity to have a better job, thand conseforquently a quality lifestyle. Learning linguistics has certainly has helped me as an eslESL teacher to reinforce my previous knowledge and to ackcnowledge nthe things that I needed to understand before tI bego and teach,ing.
